Northern Uganda

Uganda is in the East of Africa. The official languages are English, although it isn't spoken by all, and Swahili. From the point of view of religion it is a motley country, there are Christians, Sunni Muslims, Hindus, Jews and people devoted to African traditions.

The association operates in Lira district, in northern Uganda. In this land the Lord's Resistance Army's rebels (LRA), led by the ruthless visionary Joseph Kont, have been fighting for twenty years. The war, supported by Islamic Sudan caused more than 1.000.000 refugees and facilitated the spread of epidemics cholera, bringing even more misery and cruelty.
There is constant fear in the eyes of the people who saw their families destroyed, their children kidnapped and their villages burned.

Those poor people tried to take refuge in the refugee camps, which rather than provide protection, have become concentration camps where sickness, violence and suicide have often found fertile ground.

Although the war ended only three years ago, and although progress has been made regarding human rights, thousands of refugees are still unable to return to their villages.
